My main dharma (life purpose) is helping bridge gaps between cultures so we can live in a more harmonized society. I practice my dharma in SLP by educating healthcare providers and educators on culturally responsive practices! I'm excited to announce by the end of this week I will be a certified Dharma (Soul Purpose) Life Coach, helping professionals across industries create fulfilling careers by living their purpose.
Before you can truly serve multicultural populations, you MUST learn about their history, particularly in the country you're serving them in. For example, learning the nuances of African American English should be met with an understanding of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. HERE ARE SOME REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERING OUR CLIENT’S PERSPECTIVES:
- How does your client/student and their family feel about the communication disorder?
- How does culture affect how they respond to diagnosis and treatment?
- Is there a way to close the communication gap and build confidence in the treatment process?
- Have they had negative experiences with previous schools or service providers?
These critical reflection questions will help you make better connections with parents and families.
How are you improving your cultural responsiveness this year? i'm at Barnes and Noble and seeing a plethora of books on Native American culture in the Social Sciences section! Let me know if you recommend any books!
If you are a BIPOC SLP, Iit's important to utilize your social network. Despite being a minority, members of the speech community of color should know that they are not alone. Many practicing speech pathologists are thrilled to have more people of color joining the profession, and attending conventions such as NBASLH or ASHA can provide an opportunity to connect with other members of minoritized groups.
You can find a list of caucuses HERE: https://www.asha.org/practice/multicultural/opportunities/constituency/
