Culturally Responsive R

One of my Spanish-bilingual graduate students said another supervisor informed her that we shouldn't teach Retroflexed R. However, she only knows how to produce retroflex R, we think, because of her Spanish influence. I want to know if you've heard this before and if there are any articles to plead our case?
