HERE ARE SOME REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERING OUR CLIENT’S PERSPECTIVES:
- How does your client/student and their family feel about the communication disorder?
- How does culture affect how they respond to diagnosis and treatment?
- Is there a way to close the communication gap and build confidence in the treatment process?
- Have they had negative experiences with previous schools or service providers?
These critical reflection questions will help you make better connections with parents and families.
How are you improving your cultural responsiveness this year? i'm at Barnes and Noble and seeing a plethora of books on Native American culture in the Social Sciences section! Let me know if you recommend any books!
If you are a BIPOC SLP, Iit's important to utilize your social network. Despite being a minority, members of the speech community of color should know that they are not alone. Many practicing speech pathologists are thrilled to have more people of color joining the profession, and attending conventions such as NBASLH or ASHA can provide an opportunity to connect with other members of minoritized groups.
